Bankers and Bolsheviks: Lessons for Modern-Day Investors from the Russian Revolution

CFA Society Boston hosts a book talk with Hassan Malik, the author of a forthcoming book, Bankers and Bolsheviks: International Finance and the Russian Revolution. The book will be published by Princeton University Press this fall. The book tells the story of the largest sovereign default in history, which took place in Russia in 1918 after a decades-long investment boom fed by European and American investors. In his talk, Hassan Malik will discuss lessons that investors of today can learn from the Russian investment boom and sovereign default in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawing on his experience as a practitioner and investment strategist focusing on Emerging Markets and Europe. The event will be relevant to investors with an interest in emerging markets, European and American banking, sovereign debt, investment banking, and political risk, amongst other things.

About the Book: Bankers and Bolsheviks tells the dramatic story of the investment boom and subsequent bust in Russia, chronicling the forgotten experiences of leading financiers of the age. Shedding critical new light on the decision making of the powerful personalities who acted as the gatekeepers of international finance, Hassan Malik narrates how they channeled foreign capital into Russia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While economists have long relied on quantitative analysis to grapple with questions relating to the drivers of cross-border capital flows, Malik adopts a historical approach, drawing on banking and government archives in four countries. The book provides rare insights into the thinking of influential figures in world finance as they sought to navigate one of the most challenging and lucrative markets of the first modern age of globalization.

Bankers and Bolsheviks reveals how a complex web of factors drove a large inflow of capital during this tumultuous period in world history. This book demonstrates how the realms of finance and politics—of bankers and Bolsheviks—grew increasingly intertwined, and how investing in Russia became a political act with unforeseen repercussions.

About the Speaker: Hassan Malik is a financial historian and investment strategist. He studied history at the University of Chicago, and began his career as an equity analyst at J.P. Morgan in New York, before moving to Russia to work at Troika Dialog, then Russia’s largest investment bank. He was later an emerging markets macro analyst for Greenmantle, LLC and led Emerging Markets and European equity and currency strategy at the Ned Davis Research Group in London. He earned his PhD in financial history at Harvard University, and has held fellowships at the European University Institute in Florence and the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse. Bankers and Bolsheviks is his first book.
