The Evolution of the Defined Contribution Market and Public Policy Impact

The Defined Contribution market is in the process of evolving from a Savings Plan to a Retirement Plan. While this evolution has been long in the making there are certain realities that we believe are set to accelerate this evolution over the coming quarters. They include a participant base that is aging with DC benefits but not DB pension plans, Plans Sponsors who are increasingly interested in keeping assets in-plan post retirement and regulatory/legislative activity that may lead to more assets remaining in-plan and the addition of new investment options.

This discussion will focus on the evolving DC market, what's worked and what hasn't and where/how it is likely to evolve going forward. Insight will be provided by Nate Miles, CFA and Head of Retirement at Wells Fargo Asset Management and Melissa Kahn, Head of Public Policy at SSGA. Melissa will provide timely insight regarding some of the latest policy items currently being considered in Washington and we'll discuss the likely impact of any potential changes.

Nathaniel Miles, CFA
Head of Retirement, Wells Fargo Asset Management
Nate Miles is head of the Retirement Business for Wells Fargo Asset Management. He joined the firm from WisdomTree Asset Management, where he served as U.S. head of retirement solutions. In this capacity, he oversaw the creation and execution of marketing strategies and distribution for retirement business across all platforms. Prior to joining WisdomTree, Nate worked as a managing director at State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) and head of U.S. investment strategy with the Defined Contribution (DC) team, where he began his investment industry career in 2005. In this role, he led a team of DC investment strategist who specialized in expanding SSGA's sales efforts across DC clients and prospects. The team also served as internal and external experts on DC strategies, plan design architecture, and key regulatory and legislative topics affecting the retirement industry. Nate is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University and holds an honors bachelor of arts degree in economics and financial management. He has earned the right to use the CFA designation and is a member of CFA Society of Boston.

Melissa Kahn
Managing Director, Retirement Strategist, DC
Melissa is the Managing Director for Retirement Policy for the Defined Contribution team. Melissa leads the DC team in developing and communicating the team's public policy positions as they relate to the retirement market, and is responsible for cultivating relationships with key retirement policy decision-makers. Melissa is based in Washington, D.C., and in Boston. She works closely with State Street's Regulatory, Industry, and Government Affairs (RIGA) group, which is responsible for coordination of overall State Street public policy positioning and advocacy. Melissa is an attorney with extensive experience in developing and implementing policy and strategies on domestic and international employee benefits legislation and regulation, as well as Social Security reform. Importantly, she has worked for many years on Retirement Income policy. Immediately prior to joining SSGA, Melissa was a consultant providing strategic planning, policy analysis and advocacy work on a variety of issues, including retirement, long-term care, Social Security, and global employee benefits to financial institutions and large plan sponsor clients in the US. Previously, Melissa worked at MetLife, where she spent 12 years in the company's Washington D.C. government relations office. Melissa also has worked for the Retirement Strategies Group, the American Council of Life Insurance and the Equitable Life Assurance Society of America.
