Alec Stais, CFA, Chief Investment Officer at Employees Retirement System of Rhode Island

Alec is the Chief Investment Officer of the Employees’ Retirement System of Rhode Island. He supervises the day-to-day investments of the Plan’s defined benefit assets, which totalled $7.8bn as of December 2018, as well as defined contribution (401a and 457b) assets totaling approximately $1.2 bn and 529 savings plan assets totaling over $5.2 bn.

He joined ERSRI in May 2017, having previously served as a Managing Director at Goldman Sachs, where he helped to design and implement multi-asset portfolios for public and private pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, endowments and foundations in the United States and overseas. Alec is a Chartered Financial Analyst and an Associate of the Society of Actuaries.


Sally Dungan, CFA, Chief Investment Officer, Tufts University Investment Office

Ms. Sally M. Dungan has been the Chief Investment Officer of Tufts University since 2002. Ms. Dungan serves as Chief Investment Officer of Tufts University Endowment. She has been in the investment and financial management business for many years. She served as the Director of Pension Fund Management for Siemens Corporation from 2000 to 2002, Deputy Chief Investment Officer and Senior Investment Officer of Public Markets of the Pension Reserves Investment Management Board of Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1995 to 2000 and Administrative Manager for Lehman Brothers from 1990 to 1995. She worked for other firms in the securities industry. Ms. Dungan has been an Independent Director of Bertucci's Corporation since February 2004. She has been a Director at Bertucci's Restaurant Corp., since February 2004. She served as a Trustee or Independent Trustee of various Victory Funds. She served as an Independent Trustee of Munder Series Trust- Munder Integrity Mid-Cap Value Fund and Munder Series Trust- Munder Integrity Small/ Mid-Cap Value Fund since February 2011. She serves on boards of public and private institutions. She served as a Member of Supervisory Board at ProCredit Holding AG (alternate name ProCredit Holding AG & Co. KGaA). She is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Ms. Dungan holds a B.A. in French literature from Pomona College and an M.A. in Intercultural Communication from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

Daniel Kern, CFA, CFP, Chief Investment Officer at TFC Financial Management

Daniel S. Kern joined TFC Financial Management in 2015. As Chief Investment Officer, he is responsible for overseeing TFC's investment process, research activities and portfolio strategy. He authors investment newsletters and white papers and meets with select clients to provide investment support. Dan chairs the firm's Investment Committee.

Prior to joining TFC, Dan was the President and Chief Investment Officer at Advisor Partners, a boutique asset manager in the San Francisco area that manages equities and asset allocation products for advisors, financial institutions and family offices. He was responsible for management of the firm including oversight of sales, client services and operations.

Dan’s previous experience included a Managing Director/Portfolio Manager role at Charles Schwab Investment Management where he managed $3.5 billion of mutual fund assets as head of asset allocation. Prior to Charles Schwab, Dan held a Managing Director/Principal role at Montgomery Asset Management where he managed global and international equity portfolios. Before this he was a vice president at Wells Fargo Bank.

A CFA charterholder, Dan is a member of the CFA Institute and is also a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER practitioner. He is a Board member and Chair of the Investment Committee for the Cambridge Community Foundation, on the Board of Overseers for the Brandeis International Business School, an Independent Trustee for Green Century Funds, and on the Board of Directors of Wealthramp. Dan was a Board member and president of the CFA Society of San Francisco as well as Board member of the Bay Area Financial Education Foundation. He is a contributor to US News & World Report and ThinkAdvisor.com, a regular guest on Bloomberg’s Baystate Business and a frequent speaker at regional, national and international investment forums. Dan is a graduate of Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics degree. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of California, Berkeley - Haas School of Business.

Sarah N. Samuels, CFA, CAIA, Partner, NEPC

Sarah is a managing director at Wellesley College, where she is responsible for the investment of the College’s endowment, including asset allocation, portfolio construction, and manager selection across private markets, public markets, and hedge funds.

Prior to joining Wellesley, Samuels was the deputy chief investment officer at Mass PRIM, where she chaired the internal Investment Committee and oversaw asset allocation, investment research, and public markets investments. Samuels led the portfolio management of the $39 billion public markets portfolio, including US equities, developed international equities, emerging market equities, frontier equities, Treasuries, inflation-linked bonds, credit, and emerging markets debt. She regularly presented investment recommendations, asset allocation, and portfolio management strategy to the Investment Committee and Board, and was a member of the four-person Executive Management Team tasked with strategic planning and management of the organization. Samuels also worked as an associate portfolio manager at Boston Advisors and in a variety of roles at Wellington Management Company, LLP.

Samuels is a member of CFA Society Boston, a Director of the University of New Hampshire Board, and until recently served as an Advisory Board member for Girls Who Invest.

She holds the Chartered Financial Analyst and the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst designations, earned an MBA in Finance at Boston University, and a BA in German and Business from the University of New Hampshire.
